AOC is so powerful, we’re forgetting the main issue with politics altogether.

Over the last couple of months, I’ve read or heard of Alexandria Ocasio Cortez more times than I think I’ve heard my own name. And the kicker? Everything I’ve seen about this New York Representative is from ineligible voters (either minors or foreign influencers).

So what is it about AOC that makes her one of the most widely discussed politicians of 2020, especially among younger audiences? Could it be her support for the Green New Deal, an environmental bill that would help create a sustainable America? Her vehement disapproval of accepting corporate funding for her campaigns? Or is it because she played Among Us with Corpse_Husband on Twitch to encourage young voter registration?

Somehow, the representative manages to encapsulate almost everything Generation Z is looking for in a political leader. She’s focused on giving back to the American people based on her own experiences working two jobs at a young age with a single income parent. AOC’s speeches and opinions are so fascinating that we almost forget that the biggest issue in politics is the romanticization of candidates. We’re so excited to vote and put AOC on the 2024 ballot before we even think about what got Trump in office in the first place, blind support. As enchanting as AOC is, we need to remember that she is the youngest woman in congress and that comes with the same criticism that Teddy Roosevelt faced during his election. Yes, Ocasio-Cortez could be a massive stride in the Democratic future of America, but losing a 2024 election could seal the door shut for more young women of color for a very long time. Still, I’m excited to see how this congresswoman continues to take the nation by a storm and I hope that she’s not the last politician who makes me feel the way the Obamas did.
